Analysis Workbooks without BICS connections

Hi gurus,

We have created an Analysis for Office report (1.4 SP13) connecting direcly to SAP (without OLAP connection). We were able to publish this report in the BI Platform and it seems to be working without issues.

From an authorisations perspective this works fine for us but I am not clear if it follows the best practices. Is there any reason why we should be using BICS instead?
